LaShonda Rosier from Georgia Tech’s CEAR Hub, along with REU students from Georgia Southern University and community scientists, participated in Tybee Island’s Quarterly Dune Monitoring. Activities included identifying key dune species, measuring sand movement, and collecting data to assess dune restoration success. The monitoring aims to understand the role of sand dunes in protecting coastal communities and maintaining sturdy dune systems. Volunteers learned to identify dune plant species, used tools for monitoring, and worked in pairs to gather data. This event contributes to the long-term preservation of Tybee’s beaches.
