Savannah State University hosted the annual Southern Stingray Bowl in person on SSU's campus on February 1, 2025. Six teams from high schools across the state of Georgia competed for the first-place prize. The Southern Stingray Bowl is a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) coordinated by Dr. Dionne Hoskins- Brown and Dr. Victoria Young. First-place winners from the regional competitions advance to the national final competition. NOSB is designed to be an "academic competition and program that addresses a national gap in environmental and earth sciences in public education by introducing high school students to and engaging them in ocean science, preparing them for ocean science-related and other STEM careers, and helping them become knowledgeable community members and environmental stewards" (NOSB.ORG).
Rachael Buskirk, SSU/CEAR Hub Outreach Coordinator, helped organize volunteers to run the competition. Lesa Hagins, Georgia Tech/CEAR Hub Educational Outreach Manager, volunteered for the second year in a row. CEAR hub also generously contributed giveaway items as prizes for our first-, second-, and third-place winners.
